Black Hills Creations uses the sublimation process to make dozens of high quality, full color products. It is a printing process that transforms solid materials into a gas without going through a liquid phase. (Kind of like magic!) This unique method is widely used to transfer vibrant, full-color images onto various surfaces such as fabrics, ceramics, metals, and even wood. Sublimation is especially popular for personalizing items like mugs, blankets, photo panels, and more. But how exactly does sublimation work?
Sublimation printing begins with a special type of ink, known as sublimation ink, and a sublimation printer. The design or image is first printed onto a sheet of sublimation paper using these inks. Unlike traditional inkjet or laser printing, where ink or toner sits on the surface, sublimation inks are made to bond with the material being printed on through heat.
The Sublimation Process Explained
Design Creation: The desired design is first created digitally using graphic design software.
Printing: The design is printed onto sublimation paper using sublimation inks. The ink at this stage is still in a solid form.
Heat and Pressure Application: Once the design is printed, the paper is placed on the item to be printed, like a blanket or mug. Using a heat press machine, heat (typically around 350-400°F) and pressure are applied for a specific amount of time (usually 30-60 seconds). This process turns the solid ink into gas.
Sublimation Transfer: The heat opens up the pores of the polyester or polymer-coated surface, allowing the gasified ink to bond with the material. Once cooled, the ink returns to its solid state, permanently embedding into the surface.
The result is a high-quality, durable image that won’t fade, peel, or crack over time because the ink becomes part of the material, not just sitting on top of it.
Superpowers of Sublimation
Vibrant, Long-Lasting Colors: Sublimation produces incredibly vibrant colors that are deeply embedded into the material. Because the ink becomes part of the fabric or object, the print lasts much longer than traditional methods. The images won’t fade, crack, or peel, even after repeated washing or use.
High-Quality, Detailed Prints: Sublimation is known for its ability to capture fine details and complex designs. Whether it’s a high-resolution photo or intricate patterns, the process ensures clarity and precision.
No Texture on the Print: Since the sublimation ink is absorbed into the material, the surface of the print is smooth to the touch. This is especially important for wearable items like t-shirts or socks where comfort is key.
Versatility in Materials: Sublimation works best on polyester or polymer-coated surfaces, which makes it versatile for use on various products. The ability to print on hard surfaces like ceramic or metal makes it perfect for personalized gifts and promotional items.
Eco-Friendly Process: Unlike traditional screen printing, which often uses large amounts of water and creates waste, sublimation is considered an eco-friendlier option. The process itself uses no water, and there is minimal waste since only the required amount of ink is used during printing.
Customization Flexibility: Sublimation allows for a high level of customization. Customers can personalize each product with different designs, names, or images without any extra cost, making it ideal for personalized gifts or promotional items.
Sublimation printing is a powerful, versatile method for creating high-quality, personalized products that last. With its vibrant colors, durability, and ability to capture fine details, when you're looking to create personalized apparel, home decor, or promotional products, sublimation offers an efficient and eco-friendly solution for stunning results.
